An End of an Era

SJHQ  is torn to share the news that Shaneabbas Merali will be stepping down as Volleyball Coordinator with immediate effect. With this, Volleyball is forced to contend with the loss of one of its most successful and prolific coordinators ever.

It says a lot about the person Shane is, that in leaving this role, he isn’t stepping down or taking a break, but to take on even more responsibility as SJ Vice Chair. As many of you know, the Club is hoping to transition to CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) status and Shaneabbas has been involved in the preliminary stages of this process, as well as efforts going forward.

On the Volleyball front, massive successes include the youth outreach where we have members as young as 8 coming regularly to sessions and record regular attendance levels with some sessions enjoying over 60 players rocking up to Aldenham on a Saturday evening.

Under Shane, SJ broadened its reach inviting local foul system teams and building a strong relationship with our brothers in North America. In terms of organisation, we hosted two Al Wilayah tournaments and two Salam cups showing his dedication to the cause of extending fraternal ties.

Shane’s determination to keep the SJ flag flying high saw the A team make multiple trips to America and Dubai. On the court, SJ are still current Al Wilayah holders, Winning MAMT more often than City win the Carabao Cup. Far and away, Shane is the most successful VB coordinator we have had under any metric you choose.

We will be sad to see him leave his post, but have the comfort of his involvement albeit at a higher level.
On behalf of everyone at SJ, we thank Shane for all his hard work.

Looking forward, we are now seeking a new team coordinator, with fresh ideas to build from a position of strength. Volleyball is a legacy sport that enjoys tremendous worldwide heritage in the world of Khoja sports. We are interested in applications of interest, providing a short summary (no more than 150 words) outlining your targets, sessions overview, outreach and youth development.
