Salam Alaykum SJ members
After 6 years as Head of SJ Seniors, we are sad to announce that Mumtazali Kassam, affectionately known to many of us as Captain MAK, will be stepping back from his position with effect from 1 October 2024.
Captain MAK has a long standing history with SJ, stretching back to 1996 when he first joined the club. Between 2006 and 2008 he served as the Head of SJ Swimming and organised 3 swimming galas in consecutive years for all ages at the Aspire Centre. In 2019, he started and launched SJ Seniors at Hujjat, Stanmore, a vibrant but vital weekly session of sports and activities for the senior members of our community on Tuesdays. As well as leading the weekly sessions, Captain MAK has organised numerous functions and outings to ensure the continued wellbeing of SJ Senior members. He steps down from this role with the SJ Senior membership standing at 250 plus.
Captain MAK has also served the wider SJ and sports community. He has travelled 3 times as a team manager to Unity Games with SJ and umpired cricket games at both Umoja and Unity games, refereed volleyball finals as well as standing as a cricket umpire for the Hertfordshire & Middlesex mini leagues for 18 consecutive years.
In accordance with SJ procedures, the club hereby invites applications from interested SJ members for the post of sports coordinator for SJ Seniors effective from 1 October 2024. The successful candidate shall be expected to lead SJ seniors with his own team. Members wishing to apply are requested to email hos@jafferys.org and chair@jafferys.org by 14 September 2024, stating their intention to lead SJ seniors and any past experience in support of their application.
Stanmore Jafferys would like to place on record their gratitude and appreciation for Captain and all of this work for SJ over the many years. His service is one that has stretched over many years and an exemplar to all when it comes to community service.
