SJ Cycling – Prudential RideLondon Weekend

This year August 3rd and 4th marked the Prudential Ride London weekend with cycling taking over the streets of the Capital, and parts of Surrey.  With so much to do, SJ Cycling was at the centre of another weekend of cycling.

The weekend started with the Prudential RideLondon FreeCycle on Saturday.  It was an early day with over 108 registered participants from the SJ community joining tens of thousands on the streets of the Capital.  We loaded the truck with over 90 bikes and left Northwick Park Station at 8:30am to head for London.  As the children and parents boarded the train for London, there were a few brave souls that decided they would cycle from Harrow to London and meet the rest of the group at Green Park Station.  Amongst the group cycling 12 miles into London was Sakina Dhirani who at the age 13 years, completed the ride from Harrow into Green Park.  Well done Sakina.

Green Park had plenty of activities for adults and children, both fun and competitive.  Once everyone had arrived, and group photos taken, SJ Chair Shafique Govani addressed the group, and the ride commenced.  The children were able to see the site of London cycling through the Capital on traffic free roads.  The 8 mile route incorporated the fantastic landmarks around London (Westminister, Buckingham Palace, The Bank of England, London Bridge, St. Pauls Cathedral) to name a few.   Some brave children completed the 8 mile route twice before meeting at Green Park for a picnic around 1pm.

The group enjoyed a social picnic in Green Park until it was time to leave around 3pm to head back to Harrow to unload bikes and share the experience of the day.  It was fantastic to see how the group has evolved from the 10 or so we had 4 years ago, to over 100 joining us this year for a brilliant family cycling experience.

With Saturday completed, we were on to Sunday where the feature was the Men’s UCI race commencing at Bushy Park in Kingston in the afternoon (completing file loops of BoxHill) and finishing at Buckingham Palace.

The highlight for SJ was 9 members competing in the Prudential 100 mile, 46 mile, and 19 mile over the course of the day.  Joining us on the day were three additional riders from outside SJ, and of course almost 25,000 cyclists from all over the world who descend upon London to compete in the Prudential Sportives.  This year, we also had our youngest rider on the Sportive; Shahina Chandoo, who at the age of 15 years, completed the Prudential 19 mile with her father, and SJ Cycling Enthusiast Samir Chandoo.  Well done Shahina.

Overall, a brilliant weekend of cycling for the SJ community bringing families together to enjoy the sites of London in a unique way.
