In the spirit of camaraderie and healthy competition, the SJ Running embarked on its annual Teams Challenge from 5 Feb to 3 Mar 2024, marking a significant evolution from previous years. With a larger number of teams and a revamped points system, the challenge aimed not only to foster regular physical activity but also to cultivate a sense of brotherhood, motivate each other, and give back to the community.

This year, the challenge saw the participation of four teams, each comprising 19 dedicated individuals. The teams, aptly named “No Heels, Just Soles,” “Please Leave Me Alone,” “Fats and the Furious,” and “Run a Lot Squad,” brought forth a blend of competitive spirit and camaraderie and bad team names!

Unlike previous editions, which included walks, this year’s challenge encouraged a minimum of run-walk combinations, accommodating participants of varied running abilities. Each week introduced new twists in the points structure to keep the runners engaged, with bonus points awarded for various activities such as participating in group runs, running with family members, attending park runs, achieving personal bests, and volunteering at running events.

Throughout the challenge, banter and camaraderie were abundant, showcasing the runners’ competitive nature while also fostering a supportive environment. The synergy between seasoned runners and newcomers, including participants from the club’s Couch to 5K program, added to the enriching experience.

The highlight of the challenge was the announcement of the winning team, “No Heels, Just Soles,” captained by brother Sajjad Kassamali, and consisting of dedicated individuals who consistently pushed their limits, winning 3 out of the 4 weeks of challenges.

The top scorers from each group included, Arij Abbas Shah, Hussein Aliraza, Mohamed Qasim Rajan and the top scorer of the challenge, Imran Musavi, who achieved the maximum possible points, exemplifying dedication and perseverance.

The challenge yielded numerous positive outcomes, including increased participation in group runs, mutual motivation among members, and the integration of new runners into the club’s community. Moreover, the challenge emphasised the importance of small, consistent steps in building lasting habits, with 21 personal bests recorded and an impressive average of two runs per person per week across 642 activities.

As we celebrate the success of the Teams Challenge 2024, let us carry forward the spirit of camaraderie, dedication, and healthy competition into our future endeavours. Together, we have demonstrated the power of collective effort in achieving our fitness goals while fostering a strong sense of community within the SJ Running Club. Here’s to many more challenges, achievements, and memorable moments on the track ahead!
