This year the format for the adults doubles badminton tournament was changed and organised as a team sport. Each jammat could enter as many teams of 4 players as they wished. Stanmore, as usual, had the largest participation with 4.5 teams entered.
Teams were placed into groups of 4 and each team would play against other teams in their groups. Each team played a total of 6 games against the opposing team and all players in the team had to play an equal amount of games. From the group stages based upon points and wins, teams were moved into Premiership or Championship knockouts.
Our Stanmore A team consisted of:
Arif Chandoo
Abbas Kermali
Qaim Ali Ravji
Faiyaz Haji
They qualified top from the group stages and then proceeded on to win the Premiership. In the semi- finals they met a team from Wessex which had 2 Kenyan national team players. The match was close but Stanmore won. The final was between Hyderi A and Stanmore A. Our team made us proud by bringing the trophy home.
Equally impressive in the singles was Qaim Ali Ravji and Abbas Kermali. Both made it through tough matches in the group stages to meet each other for an all Stanmore Final. Qaim Ali showed great strength of character to pull through and win in the end in what was a tough and close fought game of singles. The tournament was well organised and the team event was a great success.
