SJRS Table Tennis Dominates at MAMT 22

SJRS TT participated in MAMT 22 over the weekend of 29/30 October at the beautiful facilities of Oundle Sports Centre in Peterborough. SJRS TT were also tasked with organising and running of 11 events over both days.

The adults had 4 events where 32 participants competed ( 8 were SJRS players) across 7 Jamaats. SJRS TT dominated having won 3 winners medals and 2 runners-up medals of the available 8 medals.

The youth had 7 events where 96 boys participated (52 were SJRS youth) over 6 Jamaats. Again, SJRS TT youth dominated having won 4 winners medals and 5 runners up medals of the 14 available medals.

The table tennis on display across all age groups was phenomenal and the standard was amazing. Watching the youth in particular play at such high levels with a lot of depth was such a pleasure.

SJRS TT would like to thank all the coaches, parents, and players for all the time and effort being put into improving your table tennis. SJRS TT would like to especially thank Hussein uncle Juma for all his efforts in coaching and as an ambassador to table tennis in our community.

Although the tournament was highly competitive, all players displayed good sportsmanship, respect for their opponents   and a great spirit of brotherhood. A lot of friendships were made/renewed, and many pleasurable memories created. Our fraternity participated with the highest of Ahklaq. An example of the compassion displayed was highlighted by the exemplary behavior of Qaimali Ravji who offered/pleaded a participant from another jamaat who had missed out to take his semi-final spot. Mashallah, SJRS TT is extremely proud of Qiamali and all SJRS participants. Well done all!

SJRS TT would also like to thank Mohamed Abbas Merali and his team of volunteers who organised both tournaments with clinical efficiency and precision and raised the bar on organizational skills. Planning, scheduling, and organizing 277 matches on the youth day and completing all events as scheduled smoothly and within the allocated time was tremendous achievement.

We pray to Allah to keep us all motivated and committed to the sport we love and to keep improving. Ameen.

All players were winners in the spirit with which they participated, but the SJRS representatives below got to wear a medal around their neck. Huge congratulations to all the winners and finalists for your hard work and dedication with your training including performances and for inspiring all those who watched your finals.

MAMT 22- WINNERS

Below is Hussein uncle’s Juma brief appraisal of the TT Tournament and our future aspirations.

“This year’s MAMT TT tournament was by far the most well-organized tournament that I have ever attended. On behalf of SJRS TT and all participants, I wish to congratulate and thank Mohammed Abbas and his team of volunteers for all their time and dedication for delivering an amazing tournament.

This year’s tournament in my view was also of the highest standard ever in every event. This is great achievement. All those who watched the finals of the under 12, 15 and Premiership singles events saw on display a very high standard of play with some breathtaking rallies. When I first became involved with assisting with promoting and developing TT in our community, this was my dream which came true.

From the matches I watched or umpired, the players of the tournament were Mohammed Abbas Merali (winner of both singles and doubles Premiership), Irfan Shivji (winner of Championship singles), Husayn MH Merali (winner of both singles and doubles U 15), Hassan Dhamji (winner of  singles U 15) and Mustafa Ibrahim (winner of singles U 9).  Hassan Dhamji and Mustafa Ibrahim both have exceptional natural talent and potential who if properly guided have the ability to become our next superstars and fulfil my next dream of having first Khoja players representing England!

We have been planting seeds for the last 4 years and this year’s MAMT proved that these seeds are beginning to germinate – this is a great achievement and should give all those involved with TT in our community the encouragement to continue with our work and start to think beyond MAMT and club level TT to county players and future Olympians. If we can aspire and dream of such higher goals and continue give our boys and girls the full encouragement and support which they will need along the way, these dreams will be accomplished one day and hopefully in my lifetime!

I am very grateful for having the opportunity to be involved in developing TT within our community and to work alongside with dedicated people like Mohammed Abbas and others who have fully supported me. At 67, it has given me a new life challenge and working along youth is keeping me young and motivated – my health permitting, I will continue to do my best!
